John Webster, Blind Man of Philidelphia

John Webster was the first craftsmen in the New World known to advertise for Wooden Venetian Sun Blinds. On arrival, John Webster referred to himself as Upholsterer from London. He opened a shop in Philadelphia and was, by all accounts, quite successful. catering to the residents of means and producing a high quality product and service. In addition to upholstery, Webster provided bed hangings, made and hung wall paper, offered the sale of fine fabrics and of course manufactured and repaired wooden blinds. It was John Webster with whom John and Betsy Ross first worked as apprentice before opening their own upholstery shop two blocks away offering upholstery and related services including the fabrication of the new Venetian Sun Blinds. The first known print advertisement for wooden blinds appeared in the Pennsylvania weekly Journal and Advertiser on August 20, 1767: |
